St. Xavier's is a High School for boys, [from June 2006 progressively becoming co-ed from the K.G.] managed by the Society of Jesus and recognized by the Department of Education, Gujarat State. Though a Catholic Institution, it welcomes pupils of all castes and creeds and prepares them for the Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary School Certificate Examinations. It comprises the K.G. (Kinder Garten) and Stds I-X with one parallel division having Gujarati medium and three sections having English medium as the media of instruction. Those who study through Gujarati medium have English as an additional subject. The school has Standards XI & XII of Higher Secondary, to which girls are also admitted. Std XI & XII offers Science & Commerce Streams, the latter only in English medium.
This school aims not merely at preparing it's pupils to qualify for the Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary Examinations but to develop their character and personality through graded responsibility, personal guidance and social awareness. With this vision in view and guided by the principles of the Jesuit Code of Education, the School makes a careful selection of the pupils who apply and demands high standards in ideals and attainments.
The Catholic Educators consider it their duty to show due respect to the religious feelings and the freedom of conscience of their non-Catholic pupils. However, external worship other than Christianity/Catholic is not allowed in the School premises. Catholic Students are given religious instruction, whereas non-Catholics are taught Moral Science, a course in their fundamental duties to God, to their fellowmen and women and to self.
At outset, I wish everyone to be for one another. One of the purposes of life is to live for and with the other. The God who loves the world has greater plans than we do. The sun has not locked down. Likewise, the moon has not locked down. The rivers have not locked down. The mountains have not locked down. We can go on endlessly; the list will go on because the show must go on. In short, the nature has not locked down in any sphere or space. Time is a great healer.
Fr. Charles reaching the age 58, has retired from our esteemed institution and passed the baton to someone else. Thus, Fr. Xavier Amalraj SJ, has been sent in the place of Fr. Charles to take the mission and vision ahead. In this I wish to part a message, what is done is inspired by people and dedicated to God’s plan. Every change is a chance to bring something new. Every change enables one to walk an extra mile to lead with dignity and humility.
The Covid-19 lockdown or unlock phases have made everyone to think and act like Robert Frost who wrote, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference”. How many dare think out of the box, to tread the road less travelled by? Some began sharing with me in the lines of Francis Bacon, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and few are to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention”. Our take on online education will make sense depending on whether we agree to disagree or disagree to agree with Bacon. Online Education does not substitute formal education in a school for various legitimate reasons. However, it has become the need of the hour as it is an initiation to satiate the thirst for knowledge. I wish all the parents, teachers and beloved students to take diligent care to make best use of this new platform and benefit from the same.
The time is unexpected. Our expectations have been frustrating in this post covid-19. We are surprised the way in which we have handled the situation so far. We hope to end it with diligent again. As we have our own introspection, it is often clear or becoming clearer we have learnt to adjust to the given situation and nature. It looks we are getting renewed and revived. We have learnt to laugh rather than making or giving a chance to others to laugh at. We have learnt to see others problem than ours. We have learnt to cope up and shape the world stating, “ I am not an island but part and parcel of the main land.”
We need to live with the other. We need to be for one another to care and share. We need to support everyone to join in rebuilding the broken and wounded world. In this post Covid-19 we have learnt to dream the impossible dream and becoming creative in all our endeavors. It is not about getting recognition or making false propaganda but it is time to beat against all the odds.
Dear students, online education is not a nightmare at all. I am sure you began thinking and cherishing each day. Each of you is putting an extra effort in getting things cleared in your learning process. You be assured that I make all necessary changes which may help you in getting the information proposed in a better way. Your parents, teachers and I have been putting together everything possible for our better future. I hope we turn out to be great warriors in defeating not only Corona but also age old mind set. Let the worries be put to rest.
I am certain you will miss your class room fun. I am sure you will miss your friends. I know you are sitting fingers crossed and the question remains, “when am I going back to go my regular schooling?” Put all these doubts and worries aside and take a road less travelled to unearth by keeping your flames of hope, love and charity to enkindle the fire within to reach the unreachable. Be assured of my prayers; finds ways and means to keep yourself to be creative and kind in all that you are and you do. Cherish the family time together, pray as one family. May all that we do bring glory to our God.
